What you have as a Sunday roast when you forget to go to the shops.

It has been a really busy weekend. I have had work to complete for a major deadline. H-G has had work to complete for a major deadline. B-G had birthday party after birthday party to attend in his capacity as Captain Toddler.

So, while B-G was sleeping it off, I looked up from the laptop at about 3.45 today and exclaimed ‘The shops are about to shut!!’ And yet we had nothing in.

After a frenzied debate between H-G and I as to who would rush to the Co-op before the 4 pm Sunday trading deadline, we figured that for sure we had some fresh veg, plus peas, plus sausages so would make a humble Sunday roast.

Some 2 hours later as I started cooking the cheese sauce for cauliflower cheese, we realised that we were quite wrong. In our recent quest to cook from the freezer before Christmas arrives, we discovered we had very little food. No sausages. No peas. No – anything.

So dinner was this. Cauliflower cheese with a lone bendy carrot chopped in.

And a potato.

A decent bordeaux made up for it though.

  1. This sounds a lot like our day…we had an evening meals of 3 hot dogs, a handful of baby new potatoes and a bag of crisps between 2 adults and a 2 year old. Discovering you’re out of food that can be eaten without being defrosted at 4pm on a Sunday is never good!
